Environment Agency Update about malodour from Landfill site, Buckden Rd
I write further to my update of 7 September 2021 and in relation to increases in malodour detected last week and this week.
Environment Agency Officers attended the site on 6 and 10 September 2021 and have had regular contact with the site operator to monitor progress against the action plan they supplied on 7 September 2021. In line with our guidance, please see link below, we have issued the operator with a CCS2 score for breaches of the permit condition relating to odour control and set the operator with specific actions relating to managing and monitoring of landfill gas on site.
The operator, FCC, sent the following update to the community liaison group representatives this week:
"We are continuing to work with Velox over the next few weeks to further improve on site gas extraction with the following actions:
- Installation of a more reliable flare.
- Repairs and operation of electricity generation engines.
- Installation of more gas wells across the site to enhance existing infrastructure. You may notice a drilling rig moving around on site.
- Daily checks and remediation of any issues found, as well as the use of deodorisers is ongoing."
If you continue to experience malodour at an intensity and duration that it is offensive to you, or is affecting how you use your home or local amenity, please call our free 24 hour incident hotline number: 0800 807060 or e-mail us atIncident_Communication_Service@environment-agency.gov.uk. Please note that this mailbox should not be used to report the odour as is not monitored 24/7.
We recognise the distress caused by these malodours and would like to assure you that steps are being taken to address them as a matter of urgency. We continue to liaise with the operator to monitor the actions being undertaken and we will provide you with a further update on this matter no later than 30 September 2021.
