Mal-odour reports by Environment Agency and the Regional Manager Landfill South
Dear All,
I am writing to you following the increase in reports of malodour associated with Buckden landfill. We recognise the distress caused by these malodours and would like to assure you that steps are being taken to address them as a matter of urgency.
Please find below a copy of an update issued by the site operator, FCC, that was sent to the community liaison group representatives.
Environment Agency Officers substantiated landfill related odours on Sunday evening, and Monday morning during our off-site odour assessment. The landfill was also inspected on Monday morning and we confirmed that the site had experienced a failure of the temporary flare which had been installed as part of the landfill gas management controls.
On 7 September 2021 we received an e-mail - shown below - from FCC outlining the actions they have planned for this week to address this issue which includes replacing the failed equipment. We have instructed them to provide us with daily updates on these works and we will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure a swift resolution.
We continue to attend the site on a regular basis to ensure permit compliance and work on the criminal investigation into the odour issues is ongoing.
Please note that this mailbox should not be used to report the odour as is not monitored 24/7.
If you continue to experience malodour at an intensity and duration that it is offensive to you, or is affecting how you use your home or local amenity, please call our free 24 hour incident hotline number: 0800 807060 or e-mail us atIncident_Communication_Service@environment-agency.gov.uk.
We will provide you with a further update on this matter no later than 17 September.
Kind regards,
Louise

Dear Liaison Committee,
I'm sorry to report that our gas contractor, Velox, had a failure with one of the flares in their gas control system on Sunday morning which has led to the issues over the last couple of days. This was exacerbated by a backup system also failing. Gas extraction remains on site through the remaining flare but this is struggling to cope. Staff attended the site on Sunday but were unable to restart the flare, and after further works on it yesterday it has unfortunately been written off. A further flare has therefore been ordered and we hope to have this on site and operating as soon as possible but definitely by the end of week. In the meantime all completed waste areas have been capped, wells sealed and extraction maximised in key areas. Daily checks and remediation as well as use of deodorisers is ongoing. I can only apologise but events have been beyond FCC's control and we are working with Velox to resolve the issues as soon as possible.
Kind regards
Mark Mark Cheetham – Regional Manager Landfill South
